From “Father Knows Best” to “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader in R.E.”?  Understanding the Vatican II Council in simple terms with Dr. Barry Sargent

Come explore how the church has moved from Father doing everything, to how we are all called to live out our baptismal commitment by:

• Helping at mass
• Teaching classes for children
• Leading Bible Studies
• Reaching out to your neighbor
• Witnessing your faith every day

Dr. Barry Sargent will explore with us the documents of the church calling each and every one of us to go out and be the Light of Christ to the world.  Dr. Sargent’s perspective of what the church is asking each and every one of us to do will challenge us to be Christ to others in a new way.

Through the usage of video, reading of documents and facilitated discussions, we will explore the major themes, issues, challenges and accomplishments of the Second Vatican Council seen through the eyes of council fathers, theologians, and lay persons whose lives have been touched and transformed by the spirit of renewal.

There will be nine sessions beginning September 21 at 7:00pm.  They will continue on the third Monday of each month through May.

Classes are held on the third Monday of the each month through May from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per class.  You may come to one or as many classes as your schedule allows.

No pre-registration is necessary, you may register at the door.

February 15 – 7-8:30pm:

Decree on Ecumenism and Declaration on relations to Non-Christian Religions: Healing divisions and animosity among Christians as well as fostering an understanding between the different religions is at the heart of Christ’s desire for unity and reconciliation and constitutes an essential mission of the Second Vatican Council.

Suggested Readings: Unitatis redintegratio (Decree on Ecumenism) and Nostra aetate (Declaration on the relations of the Church to Non-Christian Religions)

March 15– 7-8:30pm:

Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: The first promulgated document of Vatican II was the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.  This document is the foundation for all liturgical practices, rituals and renewal within our Catholic tradition.  It named the Eucharist as the ‘source and summit” of our faith and continues to offer an invitation for all gathered to enter fully, consciously and actively into the liturgy.

Suggested Reading: Sacrosanctum concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy)
